With the current proliferation of technology into all spheres of life, reading of books and digesting information by the youth, is becoming things of the past as the youth find it very difficult to develop the habit of reading in order to improve upon their knowledge.
It is for this reason that the Literature Committee of the Nima District of the Apostolic Church, Ghana, has inaugurated its Readers’ Club for the Children and Teens’ Ministry.
In his address, Professor Kofi Agyekum, the guest speaker of the occasion, said that reading is the key to everything that offers knowledge from the past through the present into the future, adding that, reading habit formation is by constant repetition and it helps readers to become wiser and more informed and so commended the church for initiating such a noble club for children.
The committee chairman, Elder Eric Amoako, who initiated the move, said he saw the need to introduce the children to reading habit to expand their knowledge since majority of the them do not have any interest in owning story books or having the concern to read them.
The Chairman for the occasion and General Manager of the Challenge Bookshop, Mr. Amankwandor mentioned that the initiative by the literature committee of the church would go a long way to draw more people from the dark into the light of knowledge.
Briefing the gathering about the club, Mrs. Hannah Agyeman, the Nima District Children’s Leader stated that reading has at all times and ages been a source of knowledge to everything and that it was important for the children of the church to develop reading habit to gain more knowledge in this changing world.
She maintained that television and computers have become the companions of today’s children therefore depriving them of information and knowledge.
Apostle (retired) Joseph Omari Boateng, led in the launch of the readers club and mentioned that the readers club is very challenging so the children should use the opportunity wisely to upgrade themselves.
