BORN OF THE SPIRIT

Birthing means giving life to something new. To give birth, therefore, is to produce life. The corrupted nature of man necessitated the new birth of the spirit. Spiritually, man became dead and entirely separated from God, so much so that man and God became “enemies”. As the first missionary, God took the initiative to search for man in his spiritually lifeless state in order to regenerate him back into life.

First Thessalonians 5:23 and Hebrews 4:12 confirm that man exists as a tripartite being: spirit, soul, and body. The danger of the first sin was that the third component of man, the spirit, which was produced by God when He breathed into man to give him life, became dead immediately sin entered humanity. Consequently, any person who is not born of the Spirit of God functions only with body and soul, possessing a lifeless spirit that no longer connects him to God.

To better understand this subject, let us briefly examine the conversation recorded in John chapter 3. Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, visited Jesus by night to inquire about His teachings. He was surprised when Jesus redirected the discussion toward the necessity of being born again by the Spirit. Nicodemus’ response, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”, reveals that he completely missed the spiritual essence of Jesus’ message.

However, Jesus patiently guided him through the revelation of the new birth. Jesus made it clear that being born of the Spirit is not the same as natural birth. It is also not the repair or improvement of the old sinful nature, but rather the regeneration of a completely new creature, one that had never existed before. This truth is confirmed in the Apostle Paul’s second letter to the church in Corinth:

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

In Genesis, the Bible records that after forming man’s body from the dust of the ground, God breathed into him to impart life.

Genesis 2:7: And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

For man to regain this lost life, there was a need to receive that divine breath once again. Thus, after His resurrection, Jesus breathed on His disciples and restored spiritual life to them, saying, “Receive ye the Holy Ghost.”

John 20:22: And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost.

This act signifies the rebirth of the spirit and the restoration of man’s broken relationship with God, confirming that true life is found only through being born of the Spirit.

The biggest mistake to make in life is not to be born of the spirit. Be born of the Spirit today by surrendering fully to Christ and receiving the anointing. Make the best decision now!
