In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14–30), Jesus tells of a master who entrusted three servants with different talents; five, two, and one, each according to their ability. The one given five talents traded and gained five more; the one with two did likewise and gained two more. But the servant with one buried his talent out of fear and laziness.
There is a profound lesson here: God expects profit from whatever He gives us; be it time, talent or treasure.
Yet notice that the servant with two talents was not expected to return five. He was only required to do his best with what he had.
This means that, giving is not always about how much you have, but about what you do with what you have. David once declared, “I will not offer to the Lord my God burnt offerings which cost me nothing” (2 Samuel 24:24 NKJV). It was not about ease; it was about sacrifice.
Solomon, in his wisdom, offered a thousand burnt offerings (2 Chronicles 1:6), a radical gift that costed him, but later opened doors to divine wisdom.
In our time, many want to give from convenience rather than out of scarcity. A lackadaisical heart gives little but expects overflow. We plant sparingly, expecting to reap bountifully. But the Bible is clear: “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Corinthians 9:6 NKJV).
It is great to give one, but do not envy the harvest of the one who gave five. You are not judged against another’s seed, but you will be held accountable for what you were given and what you did with it.
Seed is not only money; it could also be knowledge, service, prayer, kindness, time. Every seed has the growth potential but only when sown. “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain” (John 12:24 NKJV).
Seed must be released before it can multiply. So, work hard and sow bountifully. Don’t compare, but commit. Let your seed reflect your faith, not your fear. To whom much is given, much will be required (Luke 12:48 NKJV ). If God can trust you with little, He will entrust you with more if you proof yourself to be faithful with the little.
May your harvest reflect your sacrifice, not your wish.
