In a world increasingly marked by uncertainty, insecurity, and fear, the search for assurance has become more urgent than ever. Economic instability, social pressures, and ministerial challenges often tempt people to rely on human systems, strategic planning, influential connections, or financial security for stability. Yet Scripture points believers to a far more secure foundation: the sovereign choice of God.
Jesus declares in John 15:16, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain.” These words reshape our understanding of Christian identity and mission. Salvation and calling are neither accidental nor self-generated; they are rooted in God’s deliberate initiative. This truth becomes the believer’s assurance—the confidence that comes from being chosen, sustained, and commissioned by God.
To be chosen by God is to recognise that life is not governed by chance or human effort. The initiative belongs entirely to Him. Scripture consistently affirms this truth. God declared to Jeremiah, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee” (Jeremiah 1:5), while the Apostle Paul testified that he was set apart before birth for God’s purpose (Galatians 1:15). Divine election therefore precedes human response.
This reality removes both pride and insecurity. No believer can boast as though they earned God’s calling, nor should they live in fear as though the fulfilment of that calling depends solely on personal ability. What God begins, He faithfully sustains. This truth is especially comforting in apostolic ministry, where the demands are often great and the opposition real. Because the calling originates with God, it is upheld by His grace.
Human insurance offers protection against uncertainty, but God’s covenant provides a far greater assurance. When God chooses, He commits Himself to His purpose. Divine election is not merely a theological concept; it is a covenant relationship established by God’s faithfulness. He does not choose His people only to abandon them. He chooses, preserves, and accomplishes His purposes through them.
Job 5:19 captures this assurance beautifully: “He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.” This is not a promise of a trouble-free life but of God’s preserving presence in the midst of life’s trials. Divine election does not exempt believers from hardship; it assures them of God’s sustaining grace through every season.
Job continues to reveal the dimensions of this assurance. God delivers His people repeatedly in times of crisis. He preserves them in seasons of scarcity, for “in famine He shall redeem thee from death” (Job 5:20). He protects them from destructive accusations, for “thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue” (Job 5:21). Above all, He gives them confidence for the future, enabling them to face uncertainty without fear because their hope rests in His unchanging faithfulness.
Such assurance transforms the way believers live. Rather than being controlled by anxiety, they walk in confidence. Rather than being paralysed by uncertainty, they pursue God’s purpose with boldness. Though spiritual conflict remains a reality, as Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12, it can never frustrate the purposes of God for those He has called.
The believer’s life is therefore marked by perseverance. No crisis can nullify God’s plan, no scarcity can hinder His mission, and no opposition can silence His call. The God who chooses is also the God who preserves, equips, and brings His purposes to completion.
To be chosen by God is to live with the assurance of His covenant, the security of His presence, and the confidence of His unfailing faithfulness. Our relationship with Him did not begin with our choice but with His gracious initiative. Therefore, our confidence rests not in our own ability but in the faithfulness of the One who called us.
The believer is chosen, covered, and commissioned. Because the One who calls is faithful, the outcome is certain: we shall bear fruit, and our fruit shall remain.
