Christ is the very foundation of this world. But when was the world founded, and where was Christ when the foundational “stones” were being laid? Before creation, Christ was already there. Before Adam, before Abraham, before Noah, before Moses, Christ existed. John identified Him as the “Word” and proceeded with this emphatic opening statement to his write up in John 1:1 as, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Christ did not begin at Bethlehem; He existed before time began. He is eternal, and that is one reason He is unchangeable.
Human beings will change. Circumstances will change. Governments will change. Systems will change. The world itself will change. But THIS JESUS is unchangeable! That is how He is; that is His nature. He said in John 8:58, “Before Abraham was, I am.” He does not just say that He existed before Abraham but he identifies Himself as the Life Eternal; “I AM.” Where was this Jesus in the days of old? He was with God, and He is God. He was with Adam in the garden, Noah in the flood, Joseph in the pit, Moses in the wilderness and Daniel in the lions’ den. He walked with them, preserved them and accomplished His purposes through them. He was concealed in typologies and He manifested Himself in shadows, yet they did not fully know Him.
The writer of Hebrews declares, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8). Looking at this statement critically, the Jesus who was faithful yesterday is faithful today and will remain faithful forever. His nature has not changed. His power has not diminished. His promises have not expired. His covenant remains. His grace is still sufficient, and His works are still greater. Time cannot change Him. In fact, he was outside time to create time! Circumstances cannot weaken Him, and the failures of humanity cannot make Him unfaithful. He is the Unchanging Christ!
So, child of God, why do you worry when He has done it before? Why are you afraid when this Jesus is still in action? Is it childbirth? Hannah has been answered before. Is it provision? Isaac harvested a hundredfold even in a time of famine. Is it your health? The man at the pool of Bethesda got up after years of affliction, and the lame man at the Beautiful Gate received his healing. The situations may be different, but the Christ remains the same. Your circumstances may have changed, but Christ has not changed. Your strength may have changed, but His power has not changed. People may disappoint you, but Christ remains faithful. Doors may close, but He is still the Way. Problems may arise, but He remains the Answer. If He did it before, He can do it again!
Therefore, lift up your head and strengthen your faith. The Jesus of yesterday is the Jesus of today, and He will be the Jesus of tomorrow. He has never changed, He will never change, and He will never fail. This is the Unchanging Christ!
