SILENCING THE FUTURE: THE HIDDEN IMPACT OF GIVING KIDS DEVICES IN CHURCH

Home / Articles / SILENCING THE FUTURE: THE HIDDEN IMPACT OF GIVING KIDS DEVICES IN CHURCH

I write with deep concern regarding certain practices we may unknowingly encourage during church services, which could have long-term negative effects not only on our children but on a generation to come. While our intentions may be good and probably to solve a temporary challenge during church services, these actions may inadvertently harm their spiritual growth and development.

It has become common for parents to hand over their phones to children during church services, either to play games or watch movies (Cartoon), so they will stop crying or cease disturbance and remain calm in the service. (Seen in most churches I visit). This is particularly noticeable during sermons, a critical time when these children are often distracted by their devices rather than listening to the Word of God. (Usually, churches that have no children’s Church).

The Word of God is the foundation of our faith and growth. If our children, at such tender ages, are not exposed to or engaged with the Word, we risk creating a generation that lacks a solid spiritual foundation. By allowing this practice, we are denying them the opportunity to fully absorb the knowledge of Christ. Who said that at their ages, they cannot listen to the Word of God and fully absorb it? These children are the future leaders and policymakers of our nation. What they have is what they will grow up with. The values and teachings of the Word of God need to be deeply rooted in their lives now so that, as they grow, they will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22:6 reminds us to “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Dear parents/guardians, let us be mindful of the habits we cultivate in our children during church services and even sometimes, at home. Instead of distracting them with devices, let us encourage them to actively participate in the service. They are not too young for God. Do not think they are young to listen to the Word of God.  This is the time to plant the seeds of faith and spiritual growth in their lives. Let us not compromise or trade their future for the sake of temporary convenience. Together, let us raise a generation that stands firm on the Word of God. Let them start right. Silence is not their future!

We must have a well-defined policy around this to ensure our children are not idle during services. Listening to the Word of God is mandatory for every believer and the entire family. Even adults who do this, except for special assignments, have them resist the temptation to actively participate in service. The effect is dire! Perhaps, conduct a review of last week’s teaching or sermon and see the results.

God bless you.
