IT IS A GOAL! BUT WHAT IS YOUR ETERNAL SCORE?

Every four years, the world pauses to witness the excitement, passion, and drama of the FIFA World Cup. Nations unite, stadiums overflow with supporters, and millions cheer for their favourite teams. Yet beyond the goals, trophies, and celebrations lies a powerful lesson for the Christian believer, especially for those who eagerly await the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The World Cup begins with qualification. Not every nation automatically earns a place in the tournament. Teams must prepare, compete, and overcome challenges to qualify. In the same way, entry into the Kingdom of God is not determined by nationality, family background, or church attendance. Jesus declared, “You must be born again” (John 3:7). Salvation through Christ is the only qualification for citizenship in God’s eternal Kingdom.

No football team succeeds without a coach. The coach instructs, corrects, motivates, and prepares the players throughout the competition. Likewise, the Holy Spirit is our divine Helper, Teacher, and Guide. He empowers believers to live victoriously, discern God’s will, and overcome the tactics of the enemy. Without the Holy Spirit’s leadership, the Christian life becomes vulnerable to spiritual defeat.

The World Cup also demonstrates the importance of teamwork. Even the most gifted player cannot win a tournament alone. Victory comes when every player understands and faithfully performs his role. Similarly, the Church is the Body of Christ, where every believer has a unique function. The gifts of the Holy Spirit—including prophecy, healing, speaking in tongues, interpretation, and others—are given not for personal recognition but for the edification of the entire Body of Christ.

Discipline is another hallmark of champions. Professional footballers sacrifice comfort, maintain strict routines, and train consistently to perform at their best. Likewise, the Christian life requires spiritual discipline through prayer, Bible study, fasting, holy living, and evangelism. No athlete wins a championship without preparation, and no believer experiences spiritual victory without commitment to these essential disciplines.

Football matches are never won without opposition. Defenders challenge, opponents attack, and injuries sometimes occur. In the same way, the Christian life is marked by spiritual warfare. Believers encounter temptations, trials, persecution, and the attacks of the enemy. Yet Scripture assures us: “Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Through the power of the Holy Spirit, victory is ours.

Perhaps the greatest lesson lies in the final reward. Footballers dream of lifting the World Cup trophy before cheering crowds. Yet earthly trophies fade, records are broken, and champions are eventually forgotten. The believer, however, runs for an incorruptible crown promised by Christ to all who remain faithful until the end.

One day, the final whistle of life will sound for every one of us. The important question will not be which team we supported or which church we attended, but whether we truly belonged to Christ and remained faithful to Him.

May we run our race with endurance, live according to God’s Word, and look forward to hearing our Master say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

So, I ask again: Are you playing your Christian World Cup well?
