The Influence of Peer Pressure in Christianity

Home / Articles / The Influence of Peer Pressure in Christianity

Peer pressure is one of the most powerful forces influencing human behavior, especially in the present generation. It affects both the young and the old, believers and unbelievers, leaders and followers alike. Many destinies have been shaped—either positively or negatively—by the people individuals allow to influence them.

In Christianity, peer pressure becomes dangerous when it pulls believers away from godly standards and causes them to compromise their faith, values, and identity in Christ. Many Christians today have lost their spiritual fervor, moral convictions, prayer lives, holiness, and loyalty to God because they have allowed the wrong voices to shape their decisions and choices.

The Bible warns us in Book of Proverbs 13:20:

“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

Association is powerful. Those who walk with you will eventually influence where you arrive.

Peer pressure has diverted many people from their divine purpose. Some who were once committed to God have become spiritually cold because of unhealthy friendships. Others who once carried great dreams and godly aspirations have been drawn into immorality, disobedience, compromise, jealousy, bitterness, addiction, and rebellion.

The tragedy begins the moment a Christian removes the opinion of God from decision-making and replaces it with the approval of people.

Epistle to the Romans 12:2 says:

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

Our reference text in Book of Genesis 37:17–20 provides a clear picture of destructive peer influence.

When Joseph’s brothers saw him approaching from afar, one voice influenced the others, saying, “Let us slay him.” What began as jealousy quickly became collective wickedness fueled by negative influence.

Many believers today are trapped in secret sins, false appearances, and unhealthy relationships because they fear the opinions of others.

Integrity dies where truth is silenced.

Today, the “pit” may not be physical as in Joseph’s story, but it often appears in different forms:

* Gossip
* Sexual immorality
* Fornication and adultery
* Worldly lifestyles
* Ungodly music and entertainment
* Bullying
* Jealousy
* Disloyalty
* Rebellion against authority
* Procrastination
* Dishonesty
* Secret addictions
* Spiritual laziness
* Compromise of convictions

Many people are being pulled into these “pits” daily through the influence of others. That is the danger of peer pressure.

Are you among those digging the pit, or are you among those helping to pull Joseph out?

As a Christian, are you helping people rise or fall?

A true believer must know what he or she stands for.

Jesus said in Gospel of Matthew 15:14:

“If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.”

Before we can help others, we ourselves must be rooted in truth.

Do not allow the world to define your values.
Do not allow friendships to destroy your convictions.
Do not allow acceptance to cost you your destiny.

Peer pressure is real, powerful, and dangerous, but it is not greater than the grace of God.

Not every voice deserves access to your destiny.
Not every friendship is ordained by God.

Some people are assigned to your growth, while others are distractions from your purpose.

The same peer pressure that influenced Joseph’s brothers could have destroyed Joseph himself, yet Joseph remained different because his identity was rooted in God.

Let your convictions be stronger than your environment.
Let your obedience be louder than the crowd.
Let your faith be greater than your fear.

Choose wisely.
